Treatment Process

On the first visit you will meet the consultant. A medical and dental history is taken, along with details of your concerns, conditions, previous treatments undertaken and results of any past sleep studies. If necessary the consultant will perform a radiographs and body mass index calculation.
You will complete a pre treatment Epworth Sleepiness Scale test to give a baseline record at the start of treatment.
The consultant will undertake an extra oral inspection of the face, soft tissues and jaws. Then an intra oral examination is undertaken to include assessments of soft tissues and the teeth. A brief dental examination, periodontal assessment, dental health and mouth inspection will be undertaken.
The causes of snoring, sleep apnoea, teeth grinding, and jaw pain are discussed and explained with the help of demonstration photographs models and manikins. The range of management modalities for snoring and sleep apnoea are discussed, along with the indications, merits and limitations.
You will be given supporting literature which normally includes:
- A patient information brochure or leaflet, including testimonials from past treated patients.
- A copy of a scientific paper may also be provided, along with references to peer reviewed journals & validated research.
- An indication of likely costs and time frames for treatment.
Following the first appointment a report may be sent to the general medical practitioner, and any other interested party (e.g. a referring ENT or Chest physician and the general dental practitioner).
