There are habits which form part of therapy to reduce the incidence and severity of temporomandibular joint disorder. Avoiding contact between the teeth except during chewing and swallowing, eating soft foods, avoiding habitual maneuvering of the jaw to assess pain level, not leaning on the jaw and checking against clenching are habits which coupled with physiotherapy will relieve TMJD.

A study conducted by Duke Medicine researchers using mice has identified a protein which is critical to temporomandibular joint disorder pain associated with problems when biting and chewing. According to Professor Wolfgang Liedtke, the TRPV4, the identified protein can be the basis of development of treatment targeted at the protein and minimizing TMJ disorder.
